Might of Merchants

Might of Merchants

(Music)

„Inspired by games like Die Fugger II and The Guild, Might of Merchants combines the classic medieval economy simulation with challenging events, competing dynasties and political intrigues. Features include: atmospheric environment (changing seasons, day/night cycle, changing weather), politics, different population groups with different needs, manufacturing and supplying the goods.”

In February 2021 I sat down with Hannes Breuer, the developer, to discuss the specifications of the first track for the game. We first established the scene (background music for general gameplay), length, tempo, mood and influences. Based on that, I wrote six distinct ideas. After receiving feedback from Hannes, I advanced to compose the next, more developed suggestions written around a smaller radius of so far accepted ideas. Through this process of “funnel composition”, we arrived at a very refreshing take on Medieval game music: using mini dulcimer, pizzicato strings, a Japanese koto, and even synthesizers. After the track was done, I provided Hannes with multiple snippets and edited versions of the track for social media and promotion.

● Six 4-minute tracks for gameplay: two “general” tracks, and four tracks for each season

● The music features a wide range of ethnic instruments, such as: charango, koto, dong xiao flute, mixed boldly with synthesizers, traditional orchestral instruments and an electric bass guitar
